Here's one of my more recent publications - some #flashfiction for your Friday! https://sandyriverreview.com/2022/03/02/lampyridae-and-lobatus-gigas/
apparently my elderly neighbor has been maintaining a personal website about the history of UK photography and it is an incredible piece of work.
apparently he still uses some piece of adobe software from the 90s. there is so much care and effort here, and its such a pristine image of the early web being still updated 😭
#introduction reminder to all the new folks: remember that every admin of every Mastodon instance has permission to see your DMs. Not that they will necessarily, but they can.
Nothing on the internet is private, as a rule, but Mastodon in particular is pretty porous. Don't put anything in your DMs you wouldn't want to see on a billboard with your name attached to it.
It's not a problem, this is a feature, not a bug. But it's worth keeping in mind.
Mastodon has gained 106,723 monthly active users since the end of March (when Elon bought 9.2% of Twitter's shares). 93,603 are new accounts. Overall that's a 42% increase in Mastodon's MAU.
Currently reading NOTHING BUT BLACKENED TEETH by Cassandra Khaw. Hoping to finish it this evening. Been on a quest to read more horror novellas this year - studying structure and pacing to make an attempt at my own long-short #horror draft.
For new people wondering why Mastodon is on thousands of servers instead of one:
-It helps protect us all against Elon Musk scenarios. It's very difficult for anyone to buy a network made of thousands of independently owned servers. (It's the same reason why no one owns the world's email network, because there are so many independent providers out there.)
-If your server misbehaves (or sells out to a malevolent billionaire), you can move your account to a different server, or even to a brand new server. Decentralisation means you're never trapped on a site you hate.
...and there are lots more good reasons too, to do with servers using alternative Fediverse software etc, but I'll save that for a future post 😁
Here are two recent #microfiction pieces of mine that were published: "Lampyridae" & "Lobatus Gigas":
Fueled by spite & coffee. Chronic overthinker & undersleeper. Father, husband, friend, author, person. https://roberthelfst.com
