The problem I have with the Internet today is that, in the 1980s, I thought (hoped) that massive access to a) personal computing and b) networking would be a force that (slowly, perhaps, but inevitably over time) made us all smarter and kinder.

Instead I fear that networked computing is making us all dumber and crueller. And the dumbing and the cruelling is accelerating.

That's maybe too simplistic an analysis: it probably always had the potential to do both, and it probably *is* doing both.

I think they should strip RSS, Calendaring, Encryption, Tasks, Chat, all that stuff out of Thunderbird.

Make them all add-ons and just make Thunderbird a shell.

You want POP3/IMAP? Install the POP3/IMAP "connector".

You want Exchange Active Sync? Install the Exchange Active Sync "connector".

Want a calendar and caldav support? Install the Calendar "connector".

You get the idea.

Strip everything out of Thunderbird except just the shell.

And package and provide everything else as a plugin.

That way development can happen organically among the different plugins and at their own pace.

You sandbox the plugins and you limit the vulnerabilites and effects one plugin can influence the rest of the application too.

“It’s over!”

No, it’s not. The only difference between 2022 and 2021 is that as a society we have given up on masks or even pretending to care about kids, disabled people or the elderly.

The editor of Rossiya 1, who protested live on-air with a "No War" banner, has not been heard from since. Her lawyer apparently is not able to contact her either.

She needs all the global attention she can get right now.

Based on the new law in Russia, for her action Marina can be charged with an offense that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

We've written an open letter to @WhiteHouse to address concerns around the recent meeting about FOSS infrastructure. We believe there should be more of a voice given to consumer rights and not just addressing the needs of Big Tech.

Heads up: My TP-Link router did not find the latest firmware from its admin interface: I had to actually download the update to my computer, upload it to the router, then update manually.

So apparently there's a vaccine against COVID, called CORBEVAX, that's made in Texas on cheap, proven decades-old technologies. I sincerely hope my friends and other people stuck on the red side of the blue-vs-red mentality, who don't vaccinate on the sole reason of "those vaccines were invented by Democrats" will have an option now.

The most importantly, the vaccine is probably going to be available for the entire world.

On the social reprogramming to accept that nothing can be done

"Hypernormalization," was coined by Alexei Yurchak, who says that everyone in the Soviet Union in the 70s and 80s knew the system was failing, but no one could imagine an alternative to the status quo, and politicians and citizens alike were resigned to maintaining the pretense of a functioning society. Over time, this delusion became a self-fulfilling prophecy and the fakeness was accepted by everyone as real

We're in the hypernormalization period of the decline of our society.

How do we escape this?

The fabrication of our reality relies on not whether we believe what the propagandized media tells us or not, but whether we engage with this media at all

The propaganda machine is not simply interested in dictating reality, because it is much too difficult to get people to agree on what reality is.

Instead, this media is interested in abolishing meaning altogether, and distorting reality for different people in sufficient ways that it takes too much energy to sift through the bullshit that people just give up and accept that they're being lied to, and not actually try to discern reality.

This is what the purpose of Fox News is. Anyone who watches it and pays attention to what they're saying could be able to tell that what the talking heads tell the viewers is often contradictory or simply nonsensical.

However, this is of little consequence to the people disseminating those lies, because all they need is for the viewer to let the current fabricated reality be embedded into their identity, and then for those people whose identity is rooted in a fabricated reality to be completely unable to relate to other people because their reality is so warped that any communication immediately breaks down, unless the other person has similarly had their reality warped.

Think about all the ways that people live in fabricated realities. Flat earth, cryptocurrencies, pyramid schemes and MLMs, anti-vax BS.

The root of this isn't just watching the worst offenders of propagandistic media like fox news, but rather engaging with the media storm at all warps our reality.

We must reject the premise of corporate media that the things they report are worth our time and effort.

Politics, celebrities, millionaires and billionaires, the growing resignation to blatant corruption and legislative deadlock.

Don't invest your energy into giving a shit about the squabbles of people who don't give a shit about you.

Invest energy in yourself, improving yourself, and bettering your collective and community.

Keep yourself aware of the reality around you, but don't let media spin dictate your understanding of reality.

The reality that media wants to sell us is that everything is fine as long as we're vaccinated, and even if you think you might have been exposed to the plague, you should go out shopping anyway, oh god please go shopping, you need to buy things and go to work, because working and buying things are good for you

And the flow of money is the only thing keeping this society together.

This society that has failed us, and especially failed its most vulnerable members.

This society which does not deserve the continued contribution of our efforts to uphold it.

no one could imagine an alternative to the status quo, and politicians and citizens alike were resigned to maintaining the pretense of a functioning society.

Our society is not functional. Don't pretend it is. What are we going to do about it?

No, it’s not. They only thing you have to do is stop the spread. Which is actually extremely simple and obvious to do. (hint: lockdown)
