Was mir wieder einmal zeigt, wie krass kurz die Halbwertszeit eines herausragenden Albums heute ist ... Ich habe mir erneut Entschleunigung vorgenommen für das kommende Jahr: Weniger dem neuen Shyze hinterherlaufen, mehr die Favoriten nach vorne holen und lieb gewonnene Scheiben auflegen. Das ist eigentlich eh mein Modus, aber in diesem Jahr hab ich ein wenig meinen Weg verlassen ... also back to oldschool, Freunde!

I give each album a raw score based on an average of several musical/technical categories, then apply a replayability multiplier to give an adjusted score out of 100. [MARX_IN_SPACE]1. Faidra - Militant : Penitent : TriumphantHard to choose a number one but Faidra nicks it this year. Amazing artwork, stunningly catchy riffs and fully-realized songs. The previous record was truly excellent, this raises that bar even further. The track “Punishment Nailed Deep” is one of the best BM tunes I’ve heard in a long time. [MARX_IN_SPACE]2. RYE - ВсёMany of us stumbled on this in 2023 and what a find. RYE is a solo BM artist from Russia producing some of the most staggeringly creative music. It is most certainly at the ambient/gazey end of the BM spectrum but it blasts hard when needed. Each track is a trance-inducing hypnotic journey, the final fourteen minute opus presents a YOB-style doom crusher that pulls you from the absorption with its monolithic gravity. [MARX_IN_SPACE]3. Dodheimsgard - Black Medium CurrentAn album that’s on a lot of people’s lists this year and for good reason. Apart from the fact that we all have incredibly good taste, this thing slays like a drunk Gimli at a Goblin tupperware party. The BM origins are clear but this is much more. It’s very proggy in places with a vocal performance that ranges from BM croak to Goth baritone. Always shifting. [MARX_IN_SPACE]4. Mansion - Second DeathThe creepy album cover alone tells you how great this is going to be. Mansion bring a wonderful theatrical tone to the table, covering the story of an obscure Finnish Christian cult. Track by track, you become immersed in the crazy and controlling religious fever. Blut Aus Nord - Disharmonium - NahabFor me 2019’s Hallucinogen was a complex, breathtaking work.This one is the second offering in a Lovecraftian trilogy full of bottomless chasms, dimensional voids and discordance. It’s a maelstrom of weird time signatures and off-kilter riffing. If Gods are truly indifferent to humanity’s plight then this is probably the soundtrack to that idea.
