However, I could tell there were some personnel issues lurking in the shadows based on staff interactions and presence (and absences) at various sessions. When I met with the Provost, the interview took a turn as they were cold and dismissive (type on their laptop the entire time I was answering their questions). At the end, two librarians took me to dinner and pulled back the curtain on what the incoming director would be dealing with, which I appreciated. I didn’t get an offer, but looking back I probably would have turned it down had they selected me.

What should employers do to make the hiring process better for job hunters?

Send questions in advance – both for screening and on-site interviews; when meals are part of the interview, proactively ask for accommodations; post salaries, especially for positions requiring more experience (you’re not going to swoon us to take a lower paying job by withholding it); shorten the final interview, there is no reason that after a series of phone/video interviews that anyone should have to spend 1-2 days on site (except for high-level management/director/Dean positions)

You and Your Well-Being

How are you doing, generally?

√ I’m despondent,

√ I’m frustrated,

√ Not out of money yet, but worried,

√ I feel alone in my search

Job Hunting Post Graduate School

If you have an MLIS or other graduate level degree in a LIS field, what year did you graduate?
