DON Family History Society3. Marguerite felt unwell due to having a cold. And on February 5th her cold became worse, and the next day she was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Influenza developed into pneumonia, and they sent for her parents. Marguerite died on 13th February 1919 at No 46 Stationery Hospital, Etaples. She was 26 years old. DON Family History Society2. This society was established in 1844 as a prayer and bible study group, however, at the outbreak of war there attention turned to providing support for the servicemen. In November 1914 it established centres in France. By 1918 there were over 300 centres. Marguerite worked in the War Office Translation Bureau for two years due to her language skills. DON Family History Society1. Continuing Women's History Month. Women who joined the YMCA. Marguerite Maud McArthur was born in 1892, Kensington, London. She was the daughter of Allen Gordon McArthur and Emma Maude Finley. In January 1911 she went to Canada which she combined with holiday and studying. Marguerite returned to England in October 1914. When war broke she immediately volunteered. DON Family History Society4. Betty was killed by an air raid the following year, aged 21, having, despite the danger, stayed in the area to assist some French refugees. She was given a military funeral and was one of a handful YMCA workers to be posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre avec Palme by General Petain, for courage and devotion to duty. Once her term at St Denis was completed, Betty returned to the UK, but she was soon anxious to get back to France. In January 1916, one of Betty's aunts went to France to manage a YMCA Canteen in St Denis Hut, on the outskirts of Paris. She was the daughter of Arthur Gavin Stevenson and Catherine Grace Wheeler.
