Trevor BurrowsGot waylaid over the weekend by other matters, so we're just getting walls framed for the <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/ChickenCoop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ChickenCoop</a> project.Have never built a structure like this before; it's easy to see where some things are off, hard to know, as an amateur, how to make adjustments to get them square (and not do more harm than good).But got two walls done tonight, and most everything prepped to easily finish the other two tomorrow. As long as that happens, we'll still more or less be on schedule for our three-weekend build.

Yesterday, we cut all the wood we would need to frame the walls. Today, we're doing the actual framing.Was *super* pleased to find that aside from one or two small variations, our cuts were pretty on point! I am notoriously bad with making straight lines. As much as I would love to get into textiles, cutting fabric in to reliable shapes is my achilles heel. Even with all the right tools and tips and tricks and ample patience, my cuts can be hilariously bad.But this stack of wood is 100% flush at one end, so the side shown in the photo should highlight differences in length... a few minor spots, sure, but I will 100% take this as a success!<a href="https://techhub.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#DIY</a>

HotblackjavaI built this chicken coop a dozen years ago. This is the chicken door. It has been my intention to automate this door to open at dawn and close an hour after dusk each day, rather than having to go inside the coop and manually slide the door up and out in the morning and then slide it back down each night. I have designed this project several times over, but have not committed to it. This time is different. I'm overwhelmed by my online searches. I don't want to buy a kit only to discover that it's flimsy crap. I'm also searching locally for people who do custom jobs but I want to explore all my options and I feel like a kit would be easier. I want a coop that is big enough for at least 6 chickens but a little bigger is okay. I'd rather have more space than I need than have my girls be cramped. I'd like something with a walk-in design to make cleaning easier. My top concern is quality and security for my chickens. If you've got experience with a good coop you like, please share. I'm flexible on price. It's taken us almost every weekend for the past month to build, but totally worth the effort. Our 5 hens seem much happier in this larger space, especially the roosting area in the coop. We got our "candycane" feeders installed after this picture was taken. Still waiting for watering cups to arrive, so we'll need to keep refilling their water every day until then.
