Felicitas Macgilchrist<p>„As the parrot was overstuffed with information and tormented by the pressure of competition, she internalized her label as a 'slow learner' and 'failure', and lost confidence in her gift of flight. She became totally dependent on the cage. One day the cage was accidently left open but she was afraid to venture out…Slowly her spirit withered away. In the end, a lot of people made a lot of money on the parrot‘s education, everyone benefited except the parrot. <br><a href="https://shikshantar.org/articles/mceducation-all-whose-agenda-does-global-education-really-serve" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">shikshantar.org/articles/mcedu</span><span class="invisible">cation-all-whose-agenda-does-global-education-really-serve</span></a><br><a href="https://social.coop/tags/deschooling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deschooling</span></a></p>

All Is For All<p>Of all the fucked up "feel good" news stories I've seen lately, this one takes the cake.</p><p>A third grade teacher in North Carolina, named Shelby Lattimore, is requiring her students to do jobs for her to earn fake dollar bills, which she then requires them to pay back to her as "rent" in exchange for being "allowed" to do other things she also requires them to do, like literally sitting in a chair. But it's totally cool, because they can also use any "money" they have left over to buy permission to do things they're apparently not allowed to do normally, like eat lunch with their best friend, "sit on the carpet", or switch to a different seat if they don't like the student she normally forces them to sit next to. They can also purchase "free time", or - the most expensive item on the list - exercise authority over their classmates that is normally reserved for the teacher.</p><p>Lattimore then posts videos of herself doing this on TikTok, which are apparently popular enough that between ad revenue and "brand collabs" (which I'm 100% sure all her students gave fully voluntary and informed consent to being exploited for), she makes enough money (six figures last year, she says in the video linked below!) that she can afford to just be a school teacher without having to get a second job! And her students are learning that all they need to do to escape "generational poverty" is to "think long-term" about budgeting their money. So see, it's a heartwarmer!</p><p>DISGUSTING 🤮️ 😡️</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Unschooling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Unschooling</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Deschooling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deschooling</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Rent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Rent</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RentStrike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RentStrike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/School" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>School</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Education</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ChildLabor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ChildLabor</span></a></p><p><a href="https://inv.tux.pizza/watch?v=ikVb6otfn28" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">inv.tux.pizza/watch?v=ikVb6otf</span><span class="invisible">n28</span></a></p>

Karsten Schmidt<p>"The modern university confers the privilege of dissent on those who have been tested and classified as potential money-makers or power-holders. No one is given tax funds for the leisure in which to educate himself or the right to educate others unless at the same time he can also be certified for achievement. Schools select for each successive level those who have, at earlier stages in the game, proved themselves good risks for the established order. Having a monopoly on both the resources for learning and the investiture of social roles, the university coopts the discoverer and the potential dissenter. A degree always leaves its indelible price tag on the curriculum of its consumer. Certified college graduates fit only into a world which puts a price tag on their heads, thereby giving them the power to define the level of expectations in their society. In each country the amount of consumption by the college graduate sets the standard for all others; if they would be civilized people on or off the job, they will aspire to the style of life of college graduates." — Ivan Illich (Deschooling Society)</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.thi.ng/tags/Quote" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Quote</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.thi.ng/tags/Illich" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Illich</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.thi.ng/tags/Deschooling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deschooling</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.thi.ng/tags/Education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Education</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.thi.ng/tags/Power" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Power</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.thi.ng/tags/Certification" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Certification</span></a></p>

Adrian Riskin 🇵🇸🍉<p>If you oppose compulsory K12 schooling, are there any arguments in favor of it that you take seriously enough to think they're worth refuting? If you support it, what arguments in its favor convince you? I'm writing against it and need additional respectable opposition to argue against.</p><p>I'm asking in good faith and looking for citations rather than debates, so boosts appreciated.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Education</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/K12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>K12</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/PoliceAbolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PoliceAbolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Deschooling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Deschooling</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CompulsorySchooling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CompulsorySchooling</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Anarchy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Anarchy</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Compulsion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Compulsion</span></a></p>
