Er wohnt mit seiner Familie im mecklenburgischen <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/Carwitz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Carwitz</a>. Sein Sehnen nach Harmonie kollidiert mit den Zeitumständen und seiner eigenen inneren Zerrissenheit. Er schreibt kaum noch Belangvolles, trinkt, nimmt Tabletten. Da er mit einer Auftragsarbeit nicht vorankommt, erhält er eine Aufpasserin (Corinna Harfouch) aus Berlin. Seine Frau Anna (Jutta Wachowiak) betreut ihn in den Zeiten tiefster Depressionen, erträgt seine Aggressionen und seine Liaison mit dem Hausmädchen Anneliese (Ulrike Krumbiegel). Als er mit der Fabrikantenwitwe Ursula Losch (Katrin Sass) ein Verhältnis beginnt, lässt sie sich scheiden. Die Liebe zu der schönen, jungen Ursula gibt ihm neuen Lebensmut, doch nicht auf Dauer. Sie ist Morphinistin und zieht ihn noch weiter in den Abgrund. Den kurzen Hoch-Zeiten folgen immer größere Tiefs. Nach Ende des Krieges setzt ihn die <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/RoteArmee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#RoteArmee</a> als Bürgermeister ein, doch <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/Fallada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Fallada</a> scheitert an der ungewohnten Aufgabe - betäubt sich mit Alkohol und Morphium. Er geht nach <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/Berlin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Berlin</a>, schreibt in kurzer Zeit unter dem Einfluss von Freunden "Jeder stirbt für sich allein". Doch körperlich ist er am Ende, wird ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert, wo er im Februar 1947 stirbt. Einer der letzten aufwändig produzierten DEFA-Filme. Überzeugend verkörpert <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/J%C3%B6rgGudzuhn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#JörgGudzuhn</a> den Künstler Hans Fallada, der sein Leben nie richtig in den Griff bekam und viel zu früh starb.
