matrix is neat yeah but it seems like it's pretty costly to host it.

y'know what's great about IRC? no server-side logs. you either log on the client-side or you run a middle-man to log just the stuff you care about. the server is unburdened.

y'know why I'm not using IRC right now? client support. Are there any cross-platform IRC clients that support, like, image embeds or something similar? I just want text chat with the occasional sticker, I don't mind if stickers are just hotlinked images from my website or whatever.

Checking out #matrix as a chat solution right now. Seems much more complicated than #irc so far.

Some clients at least seem to have video chat capability, but that seems to be powered by jitsi instead (which is xmpp-based)? Curious.
