amandineturrihoelken[ARCHIVES 2021] [journal de terrain, Longwy, avec Nabila, semaine 5] Visite du quartier ouvrier de Gouraincourt   Antoine, Antonia et son compagnon nous ont donné rendez-vous sur la place devant l’Eglise du quartier Gouraincourt, quartier proche des anciennes usines de sidérurgie. Quartier d’habitation contrasté, avec d’une côté des rues remplies de jolies petites maisons ouvrières , et de l’autre de grandes maisons individuelles appartenant jadis aux ingénieurs, médecins, et, nous a t on dit, à l’ancien curé. Toute l’après-midi nous avons sillonné les rues, accompagné de leurs histoires, de leurs souvenirs et avec d’anciennes photographies amenées par Antonia.  Antoine nous a fait visiter sa magnifique maison, dans une rue ouvrière, en face des rails du chemin de fer. La couleur et les mosaïques rappellent son pays natal : le Portugal.  Le travail, le rythme, l’intégration, les engagements, les souvenirs, tout semble être lié, de près ou de loin, à ces énormes usines dont il ne reste plus aucune trace. Il est d’ailleurs inimaginable, même lorsque l’on se retrouve en face de ces lieux, d’imaginer qu’il y avait, il y a 30 ans à peine, des bâtiments et murs de fer qui recouvraient tous ces lieux.  J’aime particulièrement cette première photo. Entre l’usine qui n’existe plus derriere l’ipad, les mains d’antonia qui tiennent cette tablette, le reflet d’Antoine qui point du doigt cette usine, ce mur avec écrit Longwy Vivra, et mon reflet qui se depetre dans toute cette situation pour essayer de capter tout ça.   Je ne sais pas si nous pourrons utiliser tout l’enregistrement sonore, le vent coupe beaucoup leurs paroles.  Nous avons décidé, avec Nabila, de nous repartir les tâches. amandineturrihoelken[ARCHIVES 2021] English Below [journal de terrain, Longwy, avec Nabila, semaine 5] Rencontre avec Mireille   Mireille est française, d’origine Italienne, Luxembourgeoise et Belge. Son compagnon est d’origine italienne lui aussi. Ils habitent dans un autre quartier ouvrier de Longwy. Elle a vécu toute sa vie dans ce quartier.  Fille de syndicalistes, l’histoire de Mireille est pleine d’humanité et d’engagements. Par plusieurs générations, elle et sa famille se sont battus pour les droits, les leurs et ceux des autres. Penser l’altérité, le métissage comme une richesse sont ses maîtres mots. Son attitude et ses paroles sont douces et bienveillantes. Ses propos me font beaucoup penser à ceux de l’éducation populaire.  J’ai été surprise par le peu de traces visibles concernant sa triple histoire de la migration dans sa maison.  Nous sommes invité à manger des pâtes maison bientôt. Nous avons hâte.   Ces trois journées à écouter la parole de quelques-uns des habitant•e•s de Longwy m’a interrogé sur le lien entre le travail et l’intégration. Pour tou•te•s, le travail a eu un rôle majeur dans l’apprentissage de la langue, le rôle social accordé au sein de la communauté, la création d’amitié, l’accès au logement... Her partner is also of Italian origin. They live in another working-class district of Longwy. She has lived there all her life.  Daughter of trade unionists, Mireille's story is full of humanity and commitment. Through several generations, she and her family have fought for rights : their own and those of others. What she says reminds me a lot of the popular education movement. amandineturrihoelken[ARCHIVES 2021] English Below [journal de terrain, Longwy, avec Nabila, semaine 5] L’histoire d’Aldo    Aldo a amené avec lui, pour notre grand bonheur, plein de ses photographies de famille afin de nous raconter son histoire. Antoine et Antonia nous ont également accompagné ce jour là.   Aldo est parti de Turin, où il était cordonnier, à l’âge de 23 ans. Il est venu rejoindre deux de ses frères à Longwy. Il a travaillé dans les usines de sidérurgie. Il a rencontré sa femme (d’origine italienne elle aussi) et fondé sa famille ici.  Avec la fermeture des usines, il pu partir tôt à la retraite et ainsi monter de nombreux projets : ancien president de l’association Arpa, il s’occupe également d’organiser des voyages, du lien et de la relation avec Montecopiolo (la ville jumelée de Mont Saint Martin, ville voisine de Longwy)...   Ces discussions m’interrogent : « C’est quoi être français ? ». « Est » on français ? Le « devient »on ? Aldo est français depuis plus d’un demi-siècle (soit bien plus d’années que moi). C’est Nabila qui m’avait posé cette question il y a plusieurs mois, mais ce n’est que maintenant que je comprends le sens et l’ambiguïté et la richesse de celle-ci. ~~~🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧~~~  [field note, Longwy: week 5, with Nabila] Aldo's story Aldo brought many of his family photographs with him to tell us his story. Antoine and Antonia also accompanied us that day.   Aldo left Turin, where he worked as a shoemaker, at the age of 23. He came to join two of his brothers in Longwy. He worked in the steelworks. C’est l’occasion avec Nabila Halim de partir à la découverte d’autres coins de cette ville surprenante, et à la circulation plus qu’originale. Tout semble incroyable, chaque détail attire l’attention. Je me demande ce qu’il restera de ces émerveillements pour le projet d’exposition. This is an opportunity for Nabila Halim and I to explore other corners of this surprising city, with its highly original traffic patterns. Everything seems incredible, and every detail catches your eye. I wonder what will be left of these marvels for the exhibition project. How much will our encounters with the local people shape these first discoveries? amandineturrihoelken[ARCHIVES 2021] English Below [journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 4] Le projet commence.   Avec Nabila nous avons rencontré le premier (charmant) couple à nous avoir fait part d’un bout de leurs histoires. Ils vivent dans ce quartier qui semble tout droit sortie du film « The Truman show ». Issus tous les deux de l’immigration italienne (très présente à Longwy d’après nos premières constatations). Immigration de ses parents dans années 20 pour elle, et dans les années 50 pour lui. Ils se sont battus à la fin des années 70, durant les longues manifestations présentent à Longwy afin de conserver les usines et hauts fourneaux. Ils nous montrent des archives, j’en avais entendu parlé, mais je vois pour la première le slogan « longwy vivra ».  Les élèves de 4eD nous ont présenté leurs parcours et origines, et nous leurs avons présenté nos idées pour le projet. Issue d’une belle diversité, de la Bosnie à l’Algérie, nous avons hâte d’avancer dans ce projet avec elles et eux ! ~~~🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧~~~  [field note, Longwy: week 4] The project begins. The project begins.   Nabila and I met the first (charming) couple to share a bit of their story with us. They live in a neighbourhood that seems to have come straight out of the film ‘The Truman Show’. Both come from Italian immigrant families (very present in Longwy, according to our initial observations). Her parents immigrated here in the 20s, and his in the 50s. They fought at the end of the 70s, during the long protests in Longwy to keep the factories and blast furnaces. They showed us some archives. I'd heard about them, but this is the first time I've seen the slogan ‘Longwy vivra’.  The 4eD students told us about their backgrounds and origins, and we presented them with our ideas for the project. Tout semble incroyable, nouveau. Incapable de différencier le quotidien, de l’anecdotique, de l’incroyable, tout est surprenant. Everything seems incredible, new. Unable to differentiate between the everyday, the anecdotal, the incredible, everything is surprising. The slightest sign is open to interpretation, the slightest sign is a clue (often misleading) to trying to understand this new territory. Après 20 minutes à chercher un chemin entre les remparts, bloquée à Longwy Haut, je retourne sur mes pas.  Je croise une voiture avec un couple à l’intérieur. Je leur demande comment passer les remparts.  Très gentils, ils me proposent de me déposer car ils vont dans le même quartier que moi.  En discutant durant le chemin, nous nous rendons compte que nous avons rendez vous ensemble pour nous rencontrer !  Merci pour votre belle générosité et sympathie ! Merci également à l’association ARPA qui m’a accueillie, et deux heures durant, m’a raconté de beaux souvenirs, témoignages et de belles histoires sur Longwy. I have an appointment at 2:00 PM with the ARPA association. After 20 minutes searching for a path between the ramparts, stuck in Longwy Haut, I retrace my steps. I come across a car with a couple inside. I ask them how to get past the ramparts. Very kind, they offer to drop me off since they’re heading to the same neighborhood. As we chat along the way, we realize we have the same appointment to meet each other! Thank you for your wonderful generosity and kindness! Il ne reste aujourd’hui presque plus de trace de cette histoire.  En découvrant cette ville pour la première, en arpentant ses chemins, je me suis posée beaucoup de questions :  Que pensent ceux et celles qui tous les jours ont vu sur le dernier haut fourneau ? Quel héritage porte t-on d’une ville ? De son lieu d’habitation ? Pourquoi est-il impossible de s’approcher du haut-fourneau ? Les ouvrier•e•s des émaux de Longwy se sentiment-ils encore appartenir à cet héritage ?  [Quelques informations sur notre projet] : de janvier à juin 2021 nous réaliserons avec Nabila Halim un travail photographie et sonore avec les habitant•e•s de Longwy et les 4e D du collège Vauban autour de la thématique de la migration.
