itgrrl :donor:
hi folks 👋 I’m looking for #recs for a very-simple-to-operate portable media player (mainly for video, but music would be a bonus) that will play files from internal storage or (micro-)SD card for my dad when he periodically ends up in hospital. The hospital has decided, in its infinite wisdom, to cancel the TV rental service because “everyone has a tablet these days, even the older folks”, which… don’t even get me started 😤😡🤬

I’ll be managing the finding, downloading, & transferring media to the device, & will ship it directly to the hospital when he’s admitted. I’ll send him a box & return postage when he’s discharged so he can ship it back to me for next time.

It needs to have good quality video & audio playback without stutters, etc., (an) internal speaker(s), & a 3.5mm socket for headphones. It doesn’t need to be HD, although that would be nice. Ideally with a screen that can be used in landscape orientation, in the 5”-7” (ish) range (13-18cm) rather than something that looks like a phone & has a . Internal rechargeable battery preferred but not mandatory.

A good UI that doesn’t require the user to have a mental map of out navigate a directory structure would be a huge plus (I’m thinking something like a Plex-ish interface but with local storage, but open to any suggestions).

Ideally able to handle a range of video formats, but not mandatory I’ll convert formats if I have to

What I’m **not** looking for:

- anything that streams media or requires a wifi connection

- a tablet (unless it’s something that doesn’t require an account, or an internet connection, and can be configured in a kiosk mode that only exposes the media playback functions & doesn’t require a passcode to access)

- hacking something together from scratch

- putting something together from a kit

- having to 3D print or otherwise fab anything

- “just duct tape an RPi to an LCD screen & install this lightweight Linux distro” No. Stop it. 😜

I’m happy to import something from your favourite overseas gadget supplier, but only if they offer something that’s good quality & won’t explode 💁♀️

thanks all 💕

#HiveMind
#accessibility
