Comparing Decentralized Social Protocols: Why ActivityPub (Fediverse) is the Best Choice Over Bluesky (AtProto) and Nostr

The #socialweb is shifting away from corporate-controlled paths like #Twitter and #Facebook toward decentralized, more #DIY alternatives. The idea is simple: instead of a single company having control, decentralized protocols allow different platforms to connect while giving people the power to shape and control their digital paths. Three major decentralized protocols have emerged: Fediverse (#ActivityPub) – The most established and widely used, forming a "native" backbone of the […]

@info You're hard with #nostr
The protocol is way more powerful than #activitypub ! It's truly distributed, not decentralized.

@ManUtopiK@mastodon.social I kinda like it as a protocol, it’s the culture that is bad, we would like to use alongside ActivityPub for some of the #OMN projects.

@info It could be related. The problems with the culture of Nostr could be due to the protocol.

Blocking is limited in Nostr. If someone blocks me, I can still follow, respond to their posts, and other people can see my replies.

Also, relays can't block troublesome people either.

So sometimes it ends up attracting a certain kind of folk who would have just been blocked on platforms.

@Sibshops @info You can mute user on #nostr. Relays are agnostic. Blocking someone should be done at person's level, not relay's level.
Personally, I prefer leaving the trolls simply screaming into the void with no response...

@ManUtopiK @info The trolls aren't screaming into the void. Everyone else stills sees them and can interact with them.

In nostr, "Blocking" is just a local ignore.

@Sibshops @info So, is it a good summary ?
- mastodon : instance owner moderate what others see.
- nostr : each one moderate what they see.

@ManUtopiK @info

Close, but without the instance owner. Nostr doesn't let ordinary users moderate their own content.

- mastodon : each person moderates what they see and what others can see of theirs
- nostr : each person moderates what they see, but has no control of where their own data goes or how it is used

@Sibshops @info Ok, thanks !
Now, I wonder how I can control where my own data goes and how it is used with mastodon ?

It's unfortunately somewhat hidden in the preferences.

You can control posting privacy for each individual post in Preferences -> Others.

Also you can make sure people who want to follow you have your manual approval, too.

Public Profile -> Privacy and Reach tab -> Uncheck automatically accept new followers

There are some other options, too, for controlling privacy of your content, like not having them show up in algorithms, etc.
