Today’s poem is called ‘Fixtures’. It was written for a previous men’s football World Cup.
As for this one - given the allegations of corruption, Qatar’s appalling human rights violations, and the deaths of 6500 migrant workers - I’m not sure I’ll be watching any of it.
@brianbilston Very nice. Agreed about the Qatar connection. Well said.
I'd write you a reply in rhyme, but the Saudi Arabian ice-hockey quarter-finals are on in a minute. Mustn't miss them.
@hughashton ha ha! It’s a far better tournament than last year’s one in North Korea.
@brianbilston I echo your sentiment Brian ...this is a World Cup in which, unusually, I have zero interest. Love the poem though
@brianbilston I like it Brian, but you're absolutely right. I'm struggling to find anyone who is enthusiastic about the upcoming WC
@brianbilston Glad I've found you on masto though!
@realarvo very happy to be found. Thank you!
@brianbilston You have to do one on the #WorldCup #BeerBan! I think the Qataris have just done everyone a big favour, as no-one has to drink tasteless overpriced corporate liquid any more!
@brianbilston Apart from the political and human rights issues, haven't we had enough World Cups in the past couple of months. By my reckoning we've had Rugby, both codes, male/female/wheelchair, and various forms of cricket, again male and female. Enough!
#WorldCup22 #Qatar22 #EnoughWorldCups22
@brianbilston niether will I. Perhaps we should all meet up and do something else. Solidarity
@brianbilston I find myself torn and angry with where FIFA has left the fan
@brianbilston I’m with you and can’t imagine myself watching any of the #WorldCup games. #soccer
@brianbilston
Sport vs politics,
The bitterest pill,
Before a ball is kicked,
Football 1,
Human rights Nil.
