I grew up with these things all around. Haven't seen one in ages, though.
Had cottonwoods all over the old neighborhood as a kid. I guess they fell out of favor, leaves and such.

I agree! It is hard to see in the picture, even when zooming in, but the white patches are made out of hair that grows out of the black scales. Very cool (imo)!
