"To understand JD Vance, you need to meet the 'TheoBros.' These extremely online young Christian men want to end the 19th Amendment, restore public flogging, and make America white again. ...
Many TheoBros, for example, don’t think women belong in the pulpit or the voting booth—and even want to repeal the 19th Amendment."

@wdlindsy @inthehands Being a former-Catholic atheist:
It is no longer surprising, but remains striking, to encounter people like J.D. Vance who profess to have once been atheists but then re-associated themselves with the most extreme parts of Catholicism for the sake of bigotry and authoritarianism.
@michael_w_busch @inthehands Yes, I agree. But when one considers the enormous unelected and for-life power that a handful of hard-right Catholic operatives employ on the highest court of the land, one begins to see the appeal — for those who want ruthless power to coerce the majority in the name of their theocratic aspirations.
@wdlindsy @michael_w_busch Those who know me know my broken record that “religion” is a red herring, and the things to watch out for are fundamentalism, authoritarianism, and abuse, all of which readily slip in and out of religious clothing — but rarely leave a person. (Dawkins, for example, to my mind, went from religious to anti-religious but never stopped being a fundamentalist.)
@inthehands @wdlindsy I learn from @rebeccawatson that Richard Dawkins is calling himself a "cultural Christian" now.
As a pretext for sexism, racism, and anti-Muslim bigotry.
The authoritarian pattern is worldwide.
@michael_w_busch @wdlindsy @rebeccawatson
Oh gross. I hadn’t heard that.
@inthehands @michael_w_busch Yes, I totally agree. Keep playing that record, please.
