If you know someone going through the loss of a loved one, if you have the emotional space, ask them to introduce you to who they lost. Sit and hear about this person. Memories are special because they're kept fresh and shared.

When my father passed away an acquaintance who I did a musical with called me out of the blue and asked me if I wanted to introduce Dad to someone new. I hadn't considered it, but yes. I desperately, desperately did. For the next hour I got to keep his memory fresh.

When my mom died, that same friend called and gave me the same opportunity. It taught me so much about myself, how I wanted to remember my parents, and also that I wanted to share them as much as I could. To this day, sharing stories of my parents is a balm to my soul.

I wouldn't have known that if Andy hadn't called and asked. If you know someone going through loss, consider being the person to offer that space. They may say no! But they also might find a catharsis they didn't know they needed.
At least, that's what happened for me.
