@sarahtaber I'd be interested in knowing how fast US farming is degrading soils relative to other industrialised agricultural nations. And how much land is used to produce food as opposed to livestock feedstocks?
I guess that also there are many farmers who are sat on a huge amount of unrealised wealth accumulation in terms of land value, and they can only realise that inflated value by selling it?
@GeneralStrike Yes that's the financial model behind US agriculture. Sit on land while it grows in value, then sell it.

@sarahtaber That speculative value vastly exceeds the utility value of the land? If only there was a way to calculate the current value of all future revenue streams from an asset! 
Then we could use that to found a regulated market for agricultural land that would prioritise human need and limit opportunity for unsustainable profiteering...
