Sounds like the EU is scoping out CPTPP membership in response to the US becoming so unreliable. Very wise.

But also funny - as the UK joining CPTPP looked like (and was) an act of sheer desperation. I mocked it at the time - gravity and the shallowness of the arrangement made it no substitute for European trade.

And, you know, I was right to mock it, but if the EU joins too then it's accidentally become good policy. Funny old world.

In Dec 2024, the UK joined the CPTPP, becoming its twelfth member and the first European nation to do so. This expands UK trade, reduces tariffs, and creates opportunities in automotive, agriculture, and digital services. However, navigating trade rules and competition will be key.

In December 2024, UK PM Keir Starmer negotiated a £57B free trade deal with the GCC to boost the post-Brexit economy, targeting agriculture and manufacturing exports. The UK's CPTPP membership adds £2B annually to sectors like beverages, tobacco, and motor vehicles. These efforts redefine the UK’s global trade strategy.
