"These days, writing for humans is as intentional as it gets. It is a process of connecting and sharing ideas without the urge to optimize for keywords or engage in backlink stuffing, which is one of the most spammy activities. And yes, it is also a refusal to insult the intelligence of your potential readership by delivering them "easily digestible" content served on endless scrolling platform."

SharanWriting for HumansHow Fediverse made me discover strange new concepts that reignited my excitement for writing through tech minimalism

Just wanted to share a couple of things I've been enjoying lately.

www.datagubbe.se/ is the personal website of Carl, who uploads wonderful blog posts about vintage computing and other geeky things. I've been reading through them one by one and really enjoying what he has to share.

loriemerson.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/artyping.pdf is an old book from 1939 about how to create artwork on a typewriter, basically early ASCII art. It's an easy fascinating read and also includes many examples!

One upside of abandoning moderation is that it may push people away from the wholly open “town square” / “everyone is an influencer” model of social networking into more self-moderated communities.

I’ve long suspected that’s a healthier approach to the internet, personally.

the #32bitcafe year-end code jam event has officially started! reflect over this past year in a #blog post or submit a website/webpage about finding light in the darkness, our two themes this year.

our annual holiday event is a great time to get involved in an #indieweb / #SmallWeb community because it lasts for a whole month! if you’re a beginner, join our community so we can help you get started!

you have until january 15 to submit your entry.

if you’re interested in personal websites, hobby #webdev, or playing with #html and #css — join us to help this year be our biggest yet! we’re taking back our platforms from social media giants and building wonderful, wholesome communities that are fun, thoughtful, and creative.

happy holidays! 💖

our november newsletter is out for the #32bitcafe! our monthly newsletter talks about what community members are #blogging about this month, community news, a member's personal website of the month, and events happening in the cafe and around the #indieweb.

if you haven't subscribed or heard of us, i hope you'll give it a read and include us in your email reading! <3 it's a great way to keep up with what developers, artists, and hobbyists are doing with their personal websites to grow the #SmallWeb and get out from under the thumb of #bigtech.

Took a week and a half to try to tie together the thoughtful threads of thinky thoughts that @darius @molly0xfff @kissane and @edyong209 wove through the last #xoxofest During that time, I discovered a parallel conversation about the #smallweb #indieweb #cozyweb what-do-we-call-it-now was happening across many good and new-to-me blogs. Zeitgeist! Did my best to capture it all here: mmmx.cloud/after-xoxo

M E M E X D O T C L O U D · After xoxoThere was a particularly strong thread that ran through most of my conversations at XOXO this year. It was braided from questions (pleas?) like the following:

my stupid mastodon app was not working as i was out of town, but the 32-bit cafe is expanding our #smallweb community into another platform as well as discord. keeping our community in a walled garden is not what we wanted to do.

so 4 days ago, we launched discourse.32bit.cafe!

took a lot of work and planning, but we got it done thanks to the help of our amazing staff and beta testers! if you've wanted to interact with us or the community and didn't really want to hop on discord, we totally understand and had you in mind for this. hope to see you there, if you're interested in joining a group of hobbyists who want to build up the independent web in a positive and encouraging environment :)
