"The trigger for this report was the discovery by Laurie Adamson, a physician with #CAPE, that her kid in elementary school was bringing home materials branded by #FortisBC. She was alarmed. What's a gas company doing in my children's backpack? What are they doing in the classroom?"

Another example, FortisBC, our province’s primary natural gas provider has been pimping the hell out of their ‘low-carbon’ ‘renewable’ natural gas, which they claim to obtain by capturing methane from manure plants, landfills, and wastewater. Customers can opt-in and specify a percentage of their total natural gas volume (for a premium charge, of course) to come from ‘renewable’ sources.

However;

Due to the nature of natural gas distribution, there is no way for Fortis to deliver this ‘low-carbon’ gas directly to a specific customer, so it’s just blended into the system as a whole and the customer is essentially paying for the satisfaction of knowing that some tiny portion of the entire total methane gas consumed in the network was displaced by a ‘renewable’ alternative.

The rub? I haven’t been able to find any data from Fortis regarding what actual percentage of their total volume of NG comes from these ‘low-carbon’ sources (I suspect it’s tiny).

And assuming that every customer chose to opt for 100% of their gas to be ‘low carbon’, I strongly doubt that Fortis would be able to scale production to meet the demand. But, given the lack of transparency around how the fuel is produced & delivered there’s nothing to prevent Fortis from charging customers the premium feee for a product it never delivered.

It’s the perfect scam, really. 🤷‍♂️
