Now that I'm finally reading THE TIN DRUM, it is so abundantly clear how much Salman Rushdie ripped this template off for MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN -- to decidedly lesser effect. Gunter Grass clearly wrote the more original and more provocative novel. This book is all over the place, but in a good way. Not only was Grass the o.g. lit dude to tie a protagonist into a nation's history like this, but Grass is far wilder, more inventive, and more poignant than Rushdie ever could be.
