Patrick Hamilton, an Irish Protestant martyr, writes on social concern. There are more reasons for us to do good to others than for God to do to us. Our neighbors are equals in the chiefest of things, and may be superior in others. Yet Christ, who suffered for us, is so much above us. Consideration of this will render our hearts soft and tender.

Today, this is being called, “the sin of empathy.”

Charles Spurgeon, was a particular Baptist preacher in London. Here he considers our citizenship in heaven. Even with that foreign passport, we are to seek the good of this world. We are to do good, give, love enemies, and lend. It’s not just a burden and duty. There are rewards promised in scripture. For as an example, even God is kind to the unthankful and evil.

How do we remember these duties with a positive outlook?

"Since we are here, we must seek the good of this world. 'To do good, and to communicate, forget not 'Love you your enemies and do good and lend, hoping for nothing again. And your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for He is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil!"
