This map from around 1650 was made by the Dutch cartographer Johannes Vinckboons and shows California as an island. A half-century would pass before Spanish explorers determined with certainty that California was connected to the mainland of North America. Place names are carefully indicated on the map in red and black, and include, for example, Cape San Lucas (at the tip of present-day Baja California), Mexico, and the Tres Maria Islands off the coast of the Mexican mainland.

Johannes Vinckboons (1617-70) was a Dutch cartographer and engraver born in Amsterdam. He was a skillfull artisan, a watercolourist who made drawings of the whole world whithout ever having set foot outside the Netherlands
He was in the employ of the Dutch West India Company and for more than 30 years produced maps for use by Dutch mercantile and military shipping. He was a business partner of Joan Blaeu, one of the most important map and atlas publishers of the day. Vinckeboons drew a series of 200 manuscript maps that were used in the production of atlases

Was es noch häufiger auf Island gibt als Wasserfälle ist Wind, zumindest als ich da war. Manchmal kann er schon ein bisschen lästig werden, aber er kann auch die Wolken in Form bringen wie hier über einem alten Lavafeld auf der Halbinsel Snæfellsnes.

Even #NorthKorea knows that if they were to even violate the #ADIZ of #Guam or Kaneda AFB that the retaliation could mean #SouthKorea becomes an #Island between #China, #Russia and #Japan.
