I mean, it's not like "Safety Dance" wasn't a huge hit. It's a meme in our household, and probably many others. If you say "You can X if you want to", somebody has to say "You can leave your friends behind" and optionally ""Cause your friends can't X" etc.
But it's part of the background now. It is not for to like or to not like. It just is.
This song, I like. It's cute and catchy and also somehow thought-provoking. And it's not "Pop Goes The World" either.
"The Safety Dance" is a song by Canadian #newWave/#synthpop band #MenWithoutHats, released in Canada in 1982 as the second single from #RhythmOfYouth. The song was written by lead singer #IvanDoroschuk after he had been ejected from a club for #pogoDancing. The song entered the Canadian top 50 in February 1983, peaking at No. 11 on May 14. In the meantime, "The Safety Dance" was released in the US on March 16, but did not enter the US charts until June 25.

@uncleslacky Very good points.
On an initial reading, I'm sceptical - never trust anything on the internet or in the tabloids - but Margaret Trudeau was known to be a very good singer, and I don't want to dismiss the claim out of hand.
Further research is needed! Something to do next week...
Did Margaret Trudeau perform backing vocals on "The safety dance"? She's not credited, and it hasn't been mentioned in her biographies.
Maybe we'll find out when her sun Justin has more time to spend on fripperies...
I: is this “Pop Muzik” song you are playing cool?
College Child: Yea.
I (after #wikipedia search): It's from 1979, I was 10 years old when it came out.
CC: People at NYU are listening to it again.
I: Any Men Without Hats?
CC: No, maybe in the future.
I: *sigh*
Earlier this summer, my teenage years played a show at New York's Pier 17.

Ted Tocks Covers - Year 7 - Day 74
Blow At High Dough
Celebrating 35 years of a classic Canadian debut album. ‘Up to Here’ by The Tragically Hip still breathes excitement into a crowd.
I’m pretty sure it’s genuine.
“They shot a movie once in my home town
Every body was in it from miles around
Out at the speedway some kinda Elvis thing
Well I ain't no movie star but I can get behind anything”
