[P] I love this. This gold dragon is so expressive and alive! You can see the gentle care with which they regard the lands below them. And this was done for a Russian metal cover, this is what D&D 5.5E's Monster Manual could've looked like if not for that musky reek of underpaid, rushed interns and AI. This is what you get if you encourage and enable artists, and pay them their due.

[P] The vamp picture: Wait, the guy on the left—his elbow is backwards! Typical AI flub. I'm surprised no one caught that though?? Also, there's a weird spotlight on him (contextual lighting issues). Got some weird hands on the flower people, there, and is that oddly angular branch in the background meant to be her arm? Heh, that rakshasa has his thumbs the wrong way around. Okay, done looking at this! It's really depressing.

[P] If "art" is having as much issue with context as these are, with this level of fidelity? It's 100 per cent AI. I haven't seen a single example yet where I'm convinced a human made it. So, I guess this is how WOTC is raking in the money now. I'm not the only one to notice that the rendered dragons don't properly match their profile refs at all. They just look painted over a bit to be "close enough." Bleh. Well, at least PF isn't using AI art (for now).

[P] Also on the chimera pic: The context of that lighting is very confused, especially since there's a lightning bolt. And HOW are those wings connecting, exactly? The unicorn picture gets confused about the legs of the horss in the background, because AI sucks at context and... Guh. It's juat really shamelessly AI. The vampire picture has two characters staring off into the middle distance, not looking at anything or each other as that takes CONTEXT!

[P] Another tell for AI is contextless connections, like using shadow or an object crossing the image's path to avoid the eldritch horror of the algorithm trying to figure out how bits connect. You can't see how any of the chimera's heads connect to the body, and they're supposed to have a snake tail instead of a third serpentine draconic head. It's just so obvious. It's also easy to avoid, keep an artist on staff and have them eyeball this stuff.

[P] Good grief. The chimera is shamelessly AI. I'm definitely not a fan of this. I know it isn't even always corporate's fault either (though it mostly is) as some unscrupulous artists will turn over AI gen'd stuff as original art. That happened to DC with a Superman cover. I'm becoming quickly suspicious aswell of weak-context pictures (no background, or the character has little contextual connection to it). No, I'm not a fan of this, WOTC.

[P] And before anyone bleats "Biased Pathfinder fan spotted!"? Two things: a.) Just don't, I'm really quite sick of hiverarchy nonsense; and b.) I don't play combat-oriented games so I have no horse in that race. I just tend to nose at the new books because I like art. And D&D's new art is... mmh, pretty terrible. The blue dragon looks like a "dragon with condor bird features" prompt. There's just no passion or creativity present.

[P] In other thoughts... I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed that D&D 5.5's art looks really off. I've become accustomed to having to spot AI "art" and it's fairly egregious here. Monster Manual art especially looks very AI-y. It has vibes of prompts for "unique ideas," which AI isn't designed for—so it just stuffs random elements in there. I'm not a fan. Pathfinder at least pays artists, quite obviously as their books continue to be pretty.
