The #parker probe completes a second close flyby of the sun.
This animation shows all L3 WISPR full-field observations from the twenty-first PSP Mission Encounter (2024-09-25 - 2024-10-05). We have superimposed a grid showing helioprojective longitude and latitude, and a scale representation of the size and location of the Sun in the observations using the SDO/HMI Carrington map for this time period. The velocity and distance metrics displayed on the movies correspond respectively to the spacecraft's heliocentric velocity in kilometers per second, and its distance from the Sun's center in units of solar radii (where 1 solar radius = 695,700km). The "FOV Range" label provides the plane-of-sky distance limits of the inner and outermost edges of the fields of view, in units of solar radii. The horizontal blue line indicates the orbital plane of PSP. The timespan of this composite movie covers only the nominal science window when the spacecraft was within 0.25 au; a limited amount of data outside of this range may be available at the below links.
You can download this movie directly as an 101MB mp4 file. This sequence is also available as data processed via the LW Algorithm developed by Dr. Guillermo Stenborg (JHUAPL) and detailed in Appendix A of Howard et al. 2022 (ApJ, 936, id.43. DOI 10.3847/1538-4357/ac7ff5). Please contact the team for access to this data, which will be posted here one year after the acquisition of those observations. Explanation:
If you watch long enough, a comet will appear. Before then, you will see our Solar System from inside the orbit of Mercury as recorded by NASA's Parker Solar Probe looping around the Sun. The video captures coronal streamers into the solar wind, a small Coronal Mass Ejection, and planets including, in order of appearance, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Earth, Mars, and Jupiter. Between the emergence of Earth and Mars, Comet Tempel 1 appears with a distinctive tail. The continuous fleeting streaks are high energy particles from the Sun impacting Parker's sideways looking camera. The featured time-lapse video was taken last year during Encounter 21, Parker's 21st close approach to the Sun. Studying data and images from Parker are delivering a better understanding of the dynamic Sun's effects on Earth's space weather as well as humanity's power grids, spacecraft, and space-faring astronauts.

The NASA Parker Solar Probe, 6 days after its 23rd close approach of the Sun, is now transmitting detailed spacecraft status to Earth via the 34 meter antenna of station 35 at the DSN site in Canberra.
Transmit/Receive band: X (~8 GHz)
Downlink data rate: 160.2 bps
Science data will be downloaded in a few days over the higher rate Ka-band link using the probe's 0.6-meter High Gain Antenna (HGA) dish, at data rates of 167 kbps and higher.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) still holds the record for the fastest spacecraft ever; its nearest rival, the Helios-2 Solar Probe, is not even close.
For comparison, the table below shows speeds for various spacecraft, planets and satellites. Speeds are Sun-centric unless otherwise noted.
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe will make its 23rd close approach of the Sun tomorrow March 22, 2025 at 22:42 UTC.
At perihelion, it will be at a distance of just 6.1 million km from the solar surface, traveling at a speed of 692,000 km/h, matching its previous record set during perihelion 22 on Dec 24, 2024.
For comparison, the perihelion of planet Mercury is at 45.3 mil km.

I'm trying to wean myself off Amazon and onto local independent vendors for as much as possible. For books I found these guys in Parker, CO. I can drive there on one battery charge (I have a hybrid car and driving on a charge without the ICE kicking in is one of my criteria for shopping distance) and they can order whatever I want. I need to follow more of this approach in general.
