Journalist Frankie de la Cretaz on #Skermetti, the #SJSU women's volleyball team, and #transgender athletes:

"One of the ways the anti-trans sports push has been so effective has been by framing “fairness” around what is perceived to be fair to cis athletes, rather than by what is fair for the most marginalized athletes in the room: trans women and girls."

An essential reframing that puts #trans folks as people first, and only then as people who want to play sports.

Some really excellent critiques of #journalism, particularly comparing the #NYTimes and #ESPN in their coverage of the furor around a San Jose State volleyball player (who may or may not be trans, but who is definitely a woman).

Judge denies request to rule SJSU volleyball player ineligible | #ESPN

"The volleyball player has not spoken about her identity, and San Jose State has not commented on her identity due to federal privacy laws. ESPN is not naming the player."

The player in question is in her third year with the team. Somehow nobody complained until recently.

NOTE: SJSU lost to Colorado State; congratulations to them.

ESPN · Judge denies request to rule SJSU volleyball player ineligible - ESPNBy Katie Barnes

"A San José State University professor serving as a liaison for students demonstrating against the Israel-Hamas war was placed on a 60-day administrative leave amid an investigation into misconduct, according to a suspension letter.

"'I believe that my temporary suspension is part of an academic freedom suppression campaign against me,” she said. 'I have been an outspoken critic of the genocide in Gaza as well as an advocate for faculty rights as a California Faculty Assn. union member and leader.'"
