If anybody sees this and they're on a NZ benefit or student allowance and wondering why they haven't been paid yet the issue is apparently on the #WINZ end and not the fault of your bank it at least according to co-op bank no word from any other bank or WINZ if we're lucky the payment should be there by 9, if we're unlucky it will be there sometime tomorrow evening, if we are supremely unlucky and the entire WINZ backend is fucked we can expect payments sometime this week

"Since we've opened we've had young people walking in the door who are experiencing homelessness, some of them are sleeping rough. A substantial group have gone to Work and Income for support, have told them their situation, and been told look, you're not entitled to access to emergency housing, or access to shelter."

One of the most pernicious things about the NatACT First messaging around their new bene-bashing policy is how they say it's about "jobseekers. Implying healthy people taking a public-funded holiday from working.

A lot of kiwis probably don't know that in the WINZ system, "jobseekers" includes a lot of people with medical conditions (some lifelong). Which make it difficult or impossible for us to work fulltime, or even if we can, to fins anyone willing to employ us.

Wtf?! Since when does #WINZ just reject your call if the call time is too long?! What happened to call backs?

Who honestly calls WINZ expecting the wait time to be less than an hour?! It was 59mins wait the first time I called them and they hung up, 74mins when I rang straight back, wtf, they're taking other people's calls?!

WINZ is using MailChimp to send email. Email. A public service agency is paying a private company in the US to send email for it. Seriously? WTF.

I've been saying for ages that NZ Post ought to be pivoting into hosting email. Handling large-scale mailouts like this is a classic example of a service they could actually be making money out of, doing the digital equivalent of their traditional business.

"Here and elsewhere (e.g. Ireland) the take-up rate for [WINZ dental] grants is known to be abysmal. Either the people with greatest need don’t know such grants exist, or the hoops to be jumped through to obtain this “emergency” relief amount to a significant deterrent. The grants tend to be restricted to emergency remedial care, and do not fund the preventative work required to avoid future problems."

www.scoop.co.nz On The Case For Universal Free Dental Care | Scoop News Like Banquo’s ghost, the issue of universal free dental care keeps hovering into sight at Labour’s top table. ‘Tis a goodly, progressive idea, but it is also one that’s been done in repeatedly down the years by the shafts of political expedience,

I just sat down with a young couple who have been sleeping under an awning at my local shops through the winter. They said they've finally been grabbed a benefit, so they can rent a room. But now they're waiting for the end of the "stand down" period that WINZ insist on waiting before starting payments, leaving them sleeping rough for at least another two weeks. Words can't express how incensed I am by the casual violence of that policy.

One solution to this could be restoring and increasing funding for independent beneficiary advocacy groups, so they can provide the in-person advice that WINZ no longer offers.

"Beneficiaries calling Work and Income (WINZ) for help say they are enduring long waits - often of more than an hour - to talk to someone."

Why do #WINZ (Work and Income New Zealand) discriminate against people in relationships? Don't they realize this puts people's relationships under added stress and increases the likelihood of couple breaking up?
