To my fellow #privacy focused individuals. I’ve been using a #Fitbit for some time, and as you are aware, #Google purchased the brand a while ago now, and I have been #De-Googling my life.
What solutions have you found for #fitnesstracking? I’d be interested to know about any #OpenSource tracking options that work well with GPS and hiking apps such as #Alltrails, or other alternatives.
I’m new to this area of privacy! Beyond just taking the tracker off completely and going without.

@roguelazer Ryan Jones (on Twitter) also mentioned #AllTrails (replaced with Apple Maps outdoor navigation feature), Bitmoji, and Grammarly. I don’t really agree with AllTrails and Grammarly being replaced, though – They have a few more features than Apple’s tools, as far as I know. 
(Although Grammarly is really boasting with AI nowadays …)
@thenextsummit while I fully agree that a phone should not be the only navigation device you have on lightly traveled trails, the article loses credibility by suggesting that a map and compass or any GPS device is better than a phone. I download maps to my phone (typically #AllTrails and #OrganicMaps) and go into airplane mode when I disconnect the charging cable. My iPhone screen is much brighter than my old Garmin and the apps provide much better functionality. Map and compass for backup.
IMO, so far WikiLoc looks like the #hiking / #trekking / #biking service that offers more bang for a buck.
I'm currently on a premium subscription on Komoot and AllTrails but they're expensive compared to WikiLoc.

#AllTrails has progressively gotten worse and worse over the years for me. When #hiking out of cell range the app barely functions now, and they've gotten rid of their lifeline feature which was great way to easily share where you're going and when you're done. Just minor... Critical safety stuff... 
Recorded a hike with #AllTrails and Apple Workout on the weekend. Both got added to Health. If I look in each app, they both list it as a 3.6 km hike. If I look at it in Health, the AllTrails data says 2.27 km while the other reads as 3.6 km.
Do you use AllTrails, GAIA GPS or onXmaps?
Surprise! Bet you did not know you are *indemnifying* those companies.
Worst case translation: The company is sued and you must reimburse the company for the attorney fees they spend defending themselves. That is my understanding of the gist of “indemnification”.
