Fred Wilson leads an ‘all star team’ (thanks #reviewer2) to combine mineral physics and thermal history modelling to look at a possible way to explain observations of an early magnetic field on Earth.

@a_walker Very cool! I seem to recall a paper a few years ago about silicate melts generating the ancient magnetic field in the lower mantle (when it was still molten)… I thought this was related to that at first, but no - we’re back in the core!
@allochthonous yep - I think that’s still on the list of possibilities but I don’t recall much follow up. I could well have missed something though.
