Very glad to be back imaging after a bit of a pause!! This was Montes Appeninus on Tuesday night. I love the shadows cast by the tall peaks, and how the mountains are just dots at the far end of the range.

Telescopic monochrome lunar close-up. View of the terminator (line between night and day). The left of the image is deep shadow. The Montes Apenninus mountain range sweeps from the top right to the lower left with sunrise progressing. The peaks at closer to shadow only have their peaks illuminated. A large crater (Archimedes) is prominent near the top left, its vast basin is noticeably flat (it is a filled crater) and a detailed shadow is cast be the topography of the right hand wall, the shadow forms a crescent shape with a jagged outline. The area below Archimedes is rough with many small peaks, below that (but above Montes Apenninus) is a smooth area which is part of Mare Imbrium. Just off slightly to the right at the very top is Aristillus, it’s comparatively smaller than Archimedes but has an outcrop of peaks in the centre that are catching the light, there are also intricate ray systems extending in all directions.

The north. I am a fan of Mare Frigoris! Does anyone know anything about the horizontal rilles (or whatever they are) just catching the light here in Frigoris?

Monochrome telescopic lunar closeup. Terminator runs vertically through the image on the left-hand side. The curve of the northern limb of the moon is at the top. The Northern part of Mare Imbrium is at the bottom, a largely smooth area with some rilles, craters, and a few isolated peaks, including the hammer shaped mountain known as ‘Thor’s Hammer’. Above the mare is a rough area containing the Montes Alpes. A deep and wide valley cuts diagonally through the area, this is Vallis Alpes. Just above the middle area of the image is another smooth area – Mare Frigoris. Very plain looking, with a few horizontal rilles. Above that, spanning to the top of the moon a very busy, rugged area with many overlapping craters.

@stargazerrob lovely image. I too have had an extended 'break'; unavoidable and frustrating and dispiriting all at the same time.
