At long last, the Thunderbird blog now has a "Share To Mastodon" button!
A hearty round of applause and eternal thanks to @micah, @oopsallnaps, and @devmount for making it happen
@thunderbird@mastodon.online wouldn't it be nice to use "Share to the Fediverse" instead?
@pch_xyz @thunderbird As far as I know, there is no Fediverse-wide standardized sharing API. It is therefore understandable to simply start with the largest one (Mastodon).
@markusr@mastodon.social @thunderbird@mastodon.online Ah, so this is implemented through Mastodon API, I misunderstood it.
@pch_xyz @thunderbird As far as I know, it uses the /share endpoint (https://seediqbale.xyz/share in your case). This is not an ActivityPub standard - but it is possible that other software in the Fediverse also implemented this. But I'm also just a user
@thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount the more "share to mastodon" buttons there are on the internet, the better place it will become
@thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount Fabulous news!
FYI, on iPad I'm seeing the popup box showing up at the very top of the page, not centered regardless of my scroll position as I would expect.
@thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount @andypiper how does it work? is there an awkward “log in to my server” experience? or is it just a one-click
@kellogh @thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount @andypiper
I don't think that's avoidable (currently), but they do seem to store the response locally:
That seems like a much bigger project tbh, given the different "share" implementations in different software. Looks like there was at least one previous effort to build a generic fediverse sharer: https://github.com/Uden-AI/fediverse-share
@thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount yay! I know my suggestions didn't end up getting used but I'm happy I got to contribute to the conversation for making this happen
@thunderbird
How about adding a Mastodon chat client to Thunderbird to go with the built-in Matrix client?
@etrigan63 This has been suggested on Mozilla Connect - feel free to check it out and to upvote it!

@thunderbird@mastodon.online @micah@ilbery.family @oopsallnaps@mstdn.social @devmount@mstdn.io every website should have this
@thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount But why is there still a Twitter bird?
@counteractor @micah @oopsallnaps @devmount
Perhaps some of us refuse to acknowledge the new name
In all seriousness though, it was an oversight, proably because we invest more of our social media effort here instead of there.
I'll open an issue on our Github to get that fixed!

@counteractor @thunderbird @micah @oopsallnaps It's fixed and should be available soon
