Good Morning #Canada
On or about this date in 1541, Jacques Cartier landed near present-day Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Some 1500 colonists landed and cattle that had survived 3 months aboard ship were turned loose. A fortified settlement was built and named Charlesbourg-Royal. The 1st French settlement of Canada had begun. This attempt at a colony would end in failure but it established a disastrous future for the Indigenous people.

#OTD in 1701, Antoine de Lamothe-Cadillac founds Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, and the parish of Sainte-Anne, on the north bank of the Detroit River. It’ll keep growing and will eventually become the city of Detroit, MI, USA. #history #Detroit #Newfrance
Today in 1656, Rene Lepage de Sainte-Claire was born in Burgundy.
Between 1670 & 1674, he immigrated to New France.
In 1696, he founded Rimouski after obtaining the land from Augustin Roer de la Cardonniere.
Sainte-Claire remained in Rimouski until his death in 1718.
Katherine McKittrick's Demonic Grounds: Black Women and the Cartographies of Struggle recurrently on my mind this morning. I should go back and re-read that, after I get through the pile I have from the #library this month.

Absolutely thrilled that #CBC Ideas has produced an episode on my fantastic colleague Mairi Cowan's new book about a case of demon possession in 17th-century #Canada.

I teach an academic course where we discuss such important topics as the consequences of the fall of #newfrance, Indigenous warfare tactics, and if I should buy a rice cooker.

Hi! I’m a settler #historian (and communications officer/writer/freelance journalist/mom/cat owner) of 17th-18th centuries “#NewFrance “. Focus on Indigenous languages manuscripts written by missionaries and their circulation up to now (all the #collection #history!).
