PRESERVED // Rågens rike / Finnland 2024/25

In our current project in Vörå/Finland we planted a rye field in August 2024 and developed a series of interventions, cooking events and performances related to the importance of rye for Finland. The whole project is a participartory project carried out with the cooparetion and help of the whoe village. We will now go back to Finland for Easter for the next event and are so excited to see how the rye has grown. Stay tuned.

I managed to pick up WhistlePig The Encyclopedia of Rye - Volume 2 for a fantastic price.

Volume 2? What about Volume 1? I had that too, for a similarly fantastic price, until I got sniped. That's how I learned the hard way that Whisky Auctioneer ends their auctions at midnight, even if bids are still being made.

They have sniping protection that is supposed to extend the auction a few minutes every time a new bid comes in, but there is an undocumented hard stop. I got outbid less than a minute to midnight and was in the process of upping my bid when the auction ended. I suspect the winner knew about this loophole, which I've since confirmed.

So now I'm still hunting for vol.1. I've seen it on sale in the US, but for stupid high prices.

Anyway... Then there were some random bottles. Starting off with a couple of different bottlings of the Mortlach 16 Flora & Fauna. Due to a misunderstanding, I picked up a few of these. I now have three, so I'll probably send a couple on to auction myself.

I also picked up several grain whiskies. I love those and they're often overlooked. The North British 1980 Cask Strength was originally only available to employees of the distillery. I'm not sure the age on this one.

Another North British, this one 30 years, a Caidenhead Single Cask 43 year Invergordon and a Forgotten Gems 30 year Invergordon.

HIMMELI II

In the frame of our project PRESERVED // Rågens rike / Finnland 204/25 we dealt with the traditional himmeli objects that are made of rye straw and are now used as a traditional Christmas decoration. In the former days they would be used to ask for a good harvest. In our winter chapter (November 2024) we asked the people of the area where our project is taking place (Vörå in Finland-Sweden) to join us to create a huge himmeli by using light tubes. The village came and in joint forces the ephermeral himmeli installation was created.

The whole project is carried out with the help of the village.

Our next stay will take place soon, stay tuned.

PRESERVED // Rågens rike / Himmeli, 2024

Our current project in Finland will probably go on for a whole year. We started with the preparation of the rye field in August 2024 and came back in November for the winter session.

In the winter chapter we worked with the so called "himmelis", traditional objects made of rye straw, orginally applied to ask for a good harvest, today mainly used as Christmas decoration. We projected the structure of a classic himmeli onto the facade of a grain dryer and examined the abstract pattern. This particular himmeli is a work of the famous himmeli artist Eija Koski whom we had the honour to meet.

The dryers belong to our cooperation partners in Vörå.

Привет, с вами снова Егор, Tech Lead компании ИдаПроджект . Я все еще занимаюсь стратегией, процессами и командами в направлении backend-разработки :) Когда-то давно (по меркам IT), шесть лет назад, мы сходили на конференцию и послушали про poetry, преисполнились и внедрили его у себя на проектах. Но ничто не стоит на месте: вот уже два года мир знает о uv, а недавно появился еще и rye. Поэтому я посвятил пару выходных тестированию этих инструментов, чтобы использовать на наших типичных проектах. В статье сравним poetry, uv и rye: кто быстрее управляет зависимостями, как использовать их в Docker, и какой из них выбрать в 2025 году. Заодно пробежимся по философии инструментов и посмотрим пару новых PEP стандартов, которые могут улучшить работу с зависимостями.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO PLANT A RYE FIELD
Our current project in Finland:

The project PRESERVED // Rågens rike / Finland 2024-25 deals with the question of the identity-creating significance of rye for Finland - especially in the region of Vörå, resp. Ostrobothnia - and how this relationship can be reflected artistically ("Rågens rike" means "Kingdom of Rye"). The project is designed as a joint project in which different actors from the village community, such as farmers, neighbours, and other villagers, are involved as a significant part of the realization process: „It takes a village to plant and harvest a rye field“. The events and projects are planned in dialogue with the people of the area and are based on research and exchange
with experts linked to the topic. The project is hosted by Abramsgården Vörå and carried out on the very site as well as in selected locations in the area. To achieve this, Scheibe & Güntzel cultivated a rye field in Vörå in August 2024, with support from Andkil village.

The artists also began constructing an abstract installation resembling a hut with a seating area, designed to serve as both a communicative platform and a space for contemplation. The installation is build with material provided by the community.

In the course of the project, which is aligned with the rhythm of the seasons, Scheibe & Güntzel are presentig an artistic series consisting of interventions, performances and cooking events related to the history and significance of rye for the Finnish people, as well as events related to the growth, harvest and use of rye.

RYE-PA

½ oz lemon juice
½ oz orgeat
1½ oz rye whiskey
2 dashes Angostura bitters
3 oz New England IPA

Glassware: Double old-fashioned
Method: Combine lemon, orgeat, rye, and bitters in a shaker with ice and shake. Add the beer directly to the serving glass, then open pour the shaker into the glass. Garnish with mint.

An original by servedbysoberon on IG, but I've modified it to be more beer-forward by downplaying the sweet/sour a bit. The beer is called Frida, a #NEIPA by local brewer Braukollektiv in #Freiburg. Great summer smasher!

This weekend I hosted a Canadian whisky tasting party to support our great distillers and discover new alternatives to American bourbon.

Some of these are single grain 100% rye, while others are a blend. I'll share individual tasting notes later.
