I am looking for a simple self-host, without much maintenance.

It would need to host a local network share in RAID1 or similar
A Windows VM for test purposes
A Wireguard docker container.

I have played with TrueNAS and Unraid, but all seems... off. Would XCP-ng hypervisior with 2 VMs make sense? A Windows for testing, and then a VM for hosting share and docker (could be TrueNAS)?

@rasterweb I have been looking at a FOSS replacement for my Synology NAS.

#truenas scale was definitely recommended but I am inevitably drawn to a code-as-infrastructure fetish.

I also considered #nixos with ZFS but I think it’s time for high-availability capabilities in my homelab. So I COULD do NixOS with a k3s service.

Ultimately, I’ll probably instead run a cluster of machines with #talos Linux and get that lovely NAS functionality back (and then some) by running a #rookceph image.

Hey I got TrueNAS Scale up and running, added three old crappy disks, created a pool, dataset, SMB share, and connected to it. I only glanced at the docs and mainly figured things out. Took a while though...

TrueNAS is definitely a lot more complex than OpenMediaVault, but also seems much more powerful, but will I need/use that power?

Oh man - I decided to pull the trigger and upgrade TrueNAS scale from Dragonfish to Electric Eel and... the fact that I'm able to post this proves it worked! 😆 Migrated all of my custom apps perfectly it seems (except for nextcloud, which is just a headache for everyone). After June 1st it seems you may be forced to move to 25.04 if you're on Electric Eel, so it was time.

#truenas @selfhosting #selfhosting

@bmarinov I think there is no more spice but vnc (and a vnc:// link, so yay!): they switched from kvm to an incus based solutions for VMs. To be fair: they labeled it as "experimental" (truenas.com/docs/scale/25.04/g), but I guess there is also no alternative to not upgrading to this version: I don't think you can skip versions of #truenas scale community edition.

I guess my next step is to enable the windows remote access and used a rdp based access to it. Maybe that works better.

I have a windows 11 VM on #TrueNAS scale to do my taxes on it. Login from a #fedora 41 system via #gnome "remote viewer". I had to fiddle a bit with the initial setup (windows 11 install and configure the remote access), but now it just works.

I also need to work #citrix at work, and compared to that setup, it's miles ahead: copy and paste just works, moving the remote viewer window across screens just works,... Which might be because citrix does not support #wayland :-(
