Ubuntu on phones now receive initial VoLTE support

If you are using one of the supported Ubuntu Phone devices, such as a Volla 22 (contains a MediaTek Helio G85 SoC) or a Fairphone 5 (contains a Qualcomm QCM6490 SoC), you can now use VoLTE on your device.

The necessary modifications for both SoC vendors have been added to both the Noble Numbat version and the Focal Fossa version so that VoLTE works on these devices that have Ubuntu Touch installed. However, for other phones, such as Xiaomi and Google Pixel phones, it’s on the developer who created the port to modify it so that it works with VoLTE.

While they have tested the functionality with both high-quality voice calls and SMS messages, they have reported issues when working with MMS. In the status bar, if your phone shows VoLTE, this means that you can have high-quality voice calls.

In order to try out VoLTE support, you must make sure that:

  • your phone is running the latest version of Ubuntu Touch,
  • your phone supports VoLTE, and
  • your carrier and your cellular plan support VoLTE.

While, F-Droid is important for Android users, I use UbuntuTouch.

I did make my first contribution to UBPorts, which makes my phone OS, which is a FOSS alternative to Android.

I do use Tor, and I run a 2 MB/s Tor relay on a high bandwidth server I rent on DigitalOcean in (possibly) eco-friendly LON1 cluster as my form of contribution to the Tor project.

I also made my first annual donation to LetsEncrypt, which I do use on ~20 of my websites.

⌚🔌 For those who heard me cry after successfully fix my watch because I lost its charging cable:

I finally found the charging cable for my #PebbleTimeSteel and it is currently charging, Yay \o/

😊 What is more #nostalgia for you :

⌚ The #pebble charging animation ?

📱The old #UbuntuTouch phone ads music in the background :D ?

NB: I am now using a #Fairphone5 running Ubuntu Touch with my #PebbleTimeSteel paired !

#RecycledToot #Ubuntu #smartwatch #ubports #PebbleOS #rebble CC: @ubports @rebble

in an attempt to achieve the highest app compatibility known to man, i ended up writing a daemon that allows to install, configure and run #UbuntuTouch applications on our beloved #flx1 and it actually turned out pretty nice.

this is yet another service/client setup where now the store server is refactored to work alongside android-store (used to install android apps) to lower memory usage and the client is a #GNOME software plugin

as some might recall, we were working on a feature to allow multi booting different systems easily and without any hassle ( partitioning etc).

around that time we started to get in contact with known porters of different systems such as #UbuntuTouch and #sailfishos

after much effort and work, i can confidently say that the #flx1 will be added to the #UBports installer and OTA server soon allowing allow bare metal and multi boot installs!
