I still cannot explain this fascination I have for this laid-down blast furnace. The last vestige of a period so vivid in the memories of the residents I met.

[journal de terrain, Longwy, avec Nabila, semaine 5] L’histoire d’Aldo 


Aldo a amené avec lui, pour notre grand bonheur, plein de ses photographies de famille afin de nous raconter son histoire. Antoine et Antonia nous ont également accompagné ce jour là. 

Aldo est parti de Turin, où il était cordonnier, à l’âge de 23 ans. Il est venu rejoindre deux de ses frères à Longwy. Il a travaillé dans les usines de sidérurgie. Il a rencontré sa femme (d’origine italienne elle aussi) et fondé sa famille ici. 
Avec la fermeture des usines, il pu partir tôt à la retraite et ainsi monter de nombreux projets : ancien president de l’association Arpa, il s’occupe également d’organiser des voyages, du lien et de la relation avec Montecopiolo (la ville jumelée de Mont Saint Martin, ville voisine de Longwy)... 

Ces discussions m’interrogent : « C’est quoi être français ? ». « Est » on français ? Le « devient »on ? Aldo est français depuis plus d’un demi-siècle (soit bien plus d’années que moi). C’est Nabila qui m’avait posé cette question il y a plusieurs mois, mais ce n’est que maintenant que je comprends le sens et l’ambiguïté et la richesse de celle-ci.

[field note, Longwy: week 5, with Nabila] Aldo's story
Aldo brought many of his family photographs with him to tell us his story. Antoine and Antonia also accompanied us that day. 

Aldo left Turin, where he worked as a shoemaker, at the age of 23. He came to join two of his brothers in Longwy. He worked in the steelworks. He met his wife (also of Italian origin) and started a family here. 
With the closure of the factories, he was able to retire early and start up a number of projects: a past president of the Arpa association, he is also in charge of organising trips, links and relations with Montecopiolo...

Nous trouvons enfin le chemin pour descendre en bas des remparts. C’est l’occasion avec Nabila Halim de partir à la découverte d’autres coins de cette ville surprenante, et à la circulation plus qu’originale. Tout semble incroyable, chaque détail attire l’attention. Je me demande ce qu’il restera de ces émerveillements pour le projet d’exposition. À quel point nos rencontres avec les habitant•e•s teinteront ces premières découvertes.

We finally find the way to go down to the bottom of the ramparts. This is an opportunity for Nabila Halim and I to explore other corners of this surprising city, with its highly original traffic patterns. Everything seems incredible, and every detail catches your eye. I wonder what will be left of these marvels for the exhibition project. How much will our encounters with the local people shape these first discoveries?

J’aime commencer une nouvelle résidence, rencontrer un lieu pour les premières fois, amorcer un nouveau terrain. Tout semble incroyable, nouveau. Incapable de différencier le quotidien, de l’anecdotique, de l’incroyable, tout est surprenant. La moindre trace est sujette à interprétation, la moindre trace est un indice (souvent trompeur) pour tenter de comprendre ce territoire nouveau.

Discovery I love starting a new residency, meeting a place for the first time, starting a new field. Everything seems incredible, new. Unable to differentiate between the everyday, the anecdotal, the incredible, everything is surprising. The slightest sign is open to interpretation, the slightest sign is a clue (often misleading) to trying to understand this new territory.

La ville de Longwy a une histoire intimement liée avec celle de la sidérurgie. Ville des luttes ouvrières, ville de migration. Il ne reste aujourd’hui presque plus de trace de cette histoire. 
En découvrant cette ville pour la première, en arpentant ses chemins, je me suis posée beaucoup de questions : 
Que pensent ceux et celles qui tous les jours ont vu sur le dernier haut fourneau ? Quel héritage porte t-on d’une ville ? De son lieu d’habitation ? Pourquoi est-il impossible de s’approcher du haut-fourneau ? Les ouvrier•e•s des émaux de Longwy se sentiment-ils encore appartenir à cet héritage ?

The city of Longwy has a history deeply intertwined with the steel industry. A city of workers’ struggles, a city of migration. Today, there are almost no traces left of this history.
Discovering this city for the first time, walking through its streets, I found myself asking many questions:
What do those who have seen the last blast furnace every day think? What legacy do we carry from a city? From the place we live in? Why is it impossible to get close to the blast furnace? Do the workers of Longwy’s émaux industry still feel connected to this heritage?
