GMK Evo-X2 mini PC with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 ships in May, up for pre-order now for $1499 and up

The GMK Evo-X2 is a little computer that packs a lot of processing power thanks to an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Strix Halo processor with 16 CPU cores, 32 threads, Radeon 8060S integrated graphics and an NPU with up to 50 TOPS of AI processing performance.

First unveiled in March, the Evo-X2 is now available for pre-order in the US… kind of. If you visit the GMK website you can reserve one of […]

My aging #Ubiquiti Edgerouter-X is failing. So, I spent 3 hours yesterday trying to set up a new #Unifi Gateway Max without success. I'm returning it.

I decided to just get a #miniPC with dual 2.5Gbe and install #Opnsense on it. (This guy: a.co/d/431PbIV)

I'm hoping it arrives early because I'm not sure the Edgerouter will last until next month. I've also never used Opnsense, so this will be another grand experiment.

Maybe I'll install it in a VM on Proxmox for now so I can FAFO.

I want a tiny fanless #miniPC with an N350 or N355, and 2x m.2 2280 NVMe slots plus 1x 2.5" SATA slot. single 2.5GbE port, some USB3 ports, basic simple display ports.

those CPUs are neck and neck in benchmarks with an i5-8500T (of which I have one now as my 'webserver' Proxmox host) while using less than half the power, making them viable in fanless setups where the case is a solid aluminum heat sink.

I suppose a machine which could take 2 NVMe sticks and a SATA drive would require an even bigger amount of aluminum than the other fanless N-series mini boxes available in order to remain fanless... that is one downside and potential barrier to such a thing being available

Asus NUC 15 Pro mini PCs with Intel Arrow Lake chips now available

After introducing the Asus NUC 15 Pro and NUC 15 Pro+ mini PCs with Intel Arrow Lake processors during CES in January, Asus introduced them again with press releases in March and April. But you couldn’t actually buy the little desktop computers at the time. Now you can.

This week Simply NUC announced it was taking pre-orders for fully configured versions of the NUC 15 Pro Cyber Canyon, and […]

this is what I managed to get before any price shock:

SK Hynix Gold P31 2TB m.2 2280 NVMe SSD, this goes into my personal box, freeing up a premium 960GB NVMe stick for elsewhere

Lite-on 256GB m.2 2230 SSD, allegedly this is TLC flash I think, this will replace the wifi card in one of two webservices boxes (work vs personal)

2x Timetec 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 SODIMM, this is for the new webservices box which is not yet purchased

and a dirt cheap open box tiny 2x2:2 wifi dongle that I'm betting will have decent kernel support by the time I need it.

I still need a 2 or 4TB SATA SSD for said new webservices box, about $100 or $200 respectively.

the exact configuration of the 2 new/reconstituted boxes will depend on whether I get a #miniPC with 2x m.2 2280 slots, or just one. they will both be running #Proxmox and I will be attempting to split virtual partitions across physical devices to minimize the impact of SSD wear, which is too high with my current naive setup.
