"British Navy Officer’s Compass, Victorian Era" (c. 1855)

An attempt at photorealism in Blender. Grime and scratches added to the mahogany case, fingerprint smudges on the glass, using PBR textures from Poliigon. Lit with an HDRI and rendered in Cycles.

“Fiat 500D Bambina”

A tribute to my first (and only) car, purchased from my grandmother when I was 17.

Based on a model of a Fiat 500 Abarth 695 SS (a performance-oriented design), extensively “de-glamorized”: upgraded parts removed; UV maps modified to remove the coat of arms on the sides, normal maps repainted; wheels and interior altered (including switching the vehicle to a right-hand drive); and license plates changed, with some other minor scene changes.

In New Zealand, the 500D was sold as the "Bambina". Designed to navigate the narrow and crowded streets of Italy, the 500 was a miracle of compact engineering, built around a rear-mounted 479 cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine. I miss that little sewing machine of a car.

"Rite of Passage"

Most everyone’s journey in Blender features a wine bottle and glass, often several times. The combination of simple curves and shiny surfaces often compels 3D artists to explore the combination over and over, much as still life scenes inspire painters.

This is my version, differentiated from most by the substitution of a port sipping pipe (derived from a 17th century English design) in place of the classic wine glass, and a bottle that moves between rectangular and circular profiles. Managing a 16K HDRI with 17 exposure levels for reflections was also a focus of the work.
