Welp, #PewDiePie has opened the floodgates to the #Linux community now that he's actually done a full video explaining his move to Linux, why he did it, and why he thinks others should ditch #Windows.

I honestly expected a
nothing burger video with not much meaning/input to it, esp to someone who's already on Linux, but his points were pretty interesting. Some of his takeaways:

- He was tired of
#Microsoft's bullshit concerning ads, #AI slop, and bloat - and noted how he really supports the idea of #FOSS, and gave the example of how cool it is that #Valve saw the issue on putting all of their/our eggs (shares) in Windows' basket and addressed that by building on top of an existing FOSS project, #Wine to then develop #Proton, which as a result has unlocked and enabled the expansive #gaming scene that we have today not just for the #SteamDeck but all Linux users as a whole.

- He surprisingly loves the customisation aspect of Linux and how everything is modular - which meant we could change things like the GUI (desktop environment) and customise it as desired. He even (appropriately) used the term,
ricing lol.

- He, even more surprisingly, loves the fact that there are many Linux distros to choose from - when some find this to be somewhat a
hurdle. He highlighted how you should just pick one and move forward, which is often true - this choice doesn't really matter as much these days (if ever). His choice was #LinuxMint, the distro he's tried 15 years ago.

- He noted how, like anything, Linux isn't perfect and there may be sacrifice(s) needed - like how some apps may only be available on Windows, for
#macOS, and likewise for Linux. His sacrifice was #Adobe #Photoshop, but he was happy to ditch the thing (which costed him 60 USD just to unsubscribe), and his chosen alternative was... #GIMP - I know some might not agree, but he liked it 😂

- He mentioned how searching (locally) on Windows is garbage, and everyone knows that's just... objectively true. Like him, I too was amazed how local search actually JUST WORKS and is super fast on Linux, unlike on Windows or macOS.

- He noted how goddamn easy and intuitive installing/updating/managing apps are on Linux by using the system's package manager (app store), rather than having to look up the app installer online and dodging all of the shady sites with malwares and so on.

- As if this wasn't enough, Pewds really went down a fucking rabbit hole, almost putting to 'shame' for most, all
average Linux users (incl myself) by literally installing/using #ArchLinux on his laptop, which is normal, 'cept he's not using a regular DE like #KDE or #Gnome but he instead, opted for a tiling manager, #Hyprland with #Rofi, #Waybar and all lol.

Anyway, it's a pretty cool video - and I underestimated Pewds' love for tinkering and using the terminal, so much so that I hope his users don't think that they
actually need to use the terminal for the things he did haha.

With minimum knowledge I'd probably go for #Ubuntu or #LinuxMint but with a little effort, if you have the time, you might look at #Manjaro for maximum #speed boost.

The really big advantage with a #deb based distro is most big #software companies now have install files for them.

A lot of #linux fans will tell you to stick with what's in the #repo but if you really need a certain piece of software it's shame to set you up for a dealbreaker before you start.

#linuxmint has long been a haven for those coming from Windows. It has a fantastic balance of familiarity with the Windows interface, customisabilty, simplicity & Linux’ renowned stability.

#zorinos goes further in easing the transition for former users of both Windows as well as Mac. It adds support for native Windows programs & suggests Linux native alternatives too!

My current favourite is Mint but I’d recommend Zorin for those new to Linux.

For those who run Linux as their primary lap/desk top OS, which base distro is your preferred distro based on?

My seven-year-old XPS laptop was struggling to hit even one hour of battery life. I could replace the battery (for $100), but Dell's health monitor says the current one is still in good health... which made me suspicious.

Long story short, I replaced Windows 10 with LMDE a few days ago, and now I'm getting 4+ hours out of that very same battery.

Windows has become such a farce. 😅

ich hätte nur für #linuxmint dazu eine idee

I have another question. What is a good, full image backup that will run on Windows and Debian-based Linux?

My current thought is that I will turn my machine fully into a Linux Mint one with no Dual boot. But. I still want a 100% backup of my current machine in case I fuck things up. Something that I can load and it will fully replace my "C:" / "/sda1" with what is saved.

Like, I install Linux Mint, and something isn't working right. I can boot this software, hit load or install or something, and it will put Windows back on my machine just as it was.

I hope to never need it...but.

LGBTQIA+ and TechDawn Tåke 🌙 :sparkletrans: (@Tourma@tech.lgbt)Thinking about having to move to Windows 11 again. On one hand, I'd like a dual boot with Mint. On the other, I'd like to just buy a really fast thumbdrive use this program I've seen than makes a portable Win11 boot and just have Mint on my good PC. The downside I've been thinking of thus far if using the portable is that I wanted to do that *and* minimize the spying Windows can do on me. But thinking atm, if it's only plugged in when I need it, do I give a shit on the few things they're spying on me for? In all likelihood, Steam or EGS already know what I'm doing because those are the few games I have that are Windows-only. Hm. #Windows #Windows11 #Win11 #Linux #LinuxMint #TourmaLinux

When did you last test your #BackupStrategy ? For me it was last night after I accidentally deleted my digital music collection.
Regardless of which operating system is used loss of data can have consequences that a good #Backup can save you from.
A music collection may not seem important but I'm an old fart and a lot of my collection started life on vinyl or CDs that I no longer have. Replacing it from scratch would take hours of ripping CDs and cost money and time buying digital copies.
Now imagine something similar happening to your data.

Fortunately years of working in various IT support roles has shown me the importance of backing up data. At home I use a variation of the 3 2 1 rule and after about 30 minutes my music collection was back.
